“…Because I’m Down…”

“We should make this into a podcast!,” exclaimed Serena while Face-Timing for our twelfth week of studying “Mama Bear Apologetics” by Hillary Morgan Ferrer. “We could discuss different books that we are reading and how those books effect our view of God, ourselves, and the world,” she continued. I joked, “Yeah, everyone totally wants to hear our opinions about books, The Bible, and life every week!” We all laughed at the idea at first, trying to write it off as a pipe dream. We are all moms, busy with work, church, running our homes. How would that actually work? Would anyone even listen? Do we actually have time for this? Also, none of us know much about technology and the world of creating digital content. It seemed impossible.

However, throughout the next couple of weeks, I started feeling more like it wasn’t an impossibility. I began to grow excited at the idea of having a creative outlet that sharpened me spiritually and intellectually. I sent a text to Serena and Kim that said, “Hey Serena, how serious are you about doing a podcast? Lol because I’m down… we know mom and dad will be loyal listeners.”

It all began to snowball from there… researching, figuring out what our niche would be, coming up with a name, branding, writing, recording, editing… on and on.

We don’t know where this will go, what fruit will come out of it, or if anyone will even care. There have been many times I have wanted to write or publish content and I have dismissed the idea because I’ve thought, “does the world really need another person throwing their opinion out there?” However, I have been convicted more and more of the world’s need for people to speak truth. In America’s postmodern society, truth has become subjective. You will frequently hear non-Christians and Christians alike exclaiming “S/he is just living out his/her truth.” With objective truth and morality being compromised and the take over of emotionalism, the mental health field is booming. I am constantly working with clients who are following their feelings into mental, emotional, and spiritual crisis because they refuse to align their feelings and actions with objective truth written in God’s word. Now is not the time to shrink away from speaking the truth in love.

I am reminded of Isaiah’s call into ministry. The nation of Judah is, of course, deep in sin and rebellion. God is looking for someone to send to warn His people of the destruction to come if they do not repent and turn back to Him and the hope of restoration if they do. Isaiah 6:8 states, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord asking: Who should I send? Who will go for us? I said: Here I am. Send me.” What’s funny about this verse is that it is often used to pump people up to go out and preach the Gospel (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). However, what is often not explained is the pure and utter rejection that most prophets and messengers of the Gospel typically experienced (1 Thess. 2:15, Luke 16:29-31).

As we put out content for people to listen to and read, we are subjecting ourselves to rejection. However, when it comes to speaking about things that matter, like the Truth found in God’s word and how that applies to our lives, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Because…

If one person can come to know and love The Lord…

If one person can walk more closely with Abba Father…

If one person can be comforted with the hope within us because of Jesus Christ…

…I’m down.
